This study aimed at designing and developing activity based exemplary materials to
enhance the teaching and learning of oral comprehension skills of expression among
the secondary school students in Tanzania. The study designed interactive exemplary
materials and tried out the materials to evaluate their effectiveness and efficiency in
enabling the learners to develop confidence in self-expression. Questionnaires,
interviews, classroom observations, documentary reviews, and pre-and post-tests
were used to collect data. The quasi experimental design was used using a control
and an experimental group.
The study findings and observations showed that the materials and the approach have
helped teachers in enhancing students‟ learning and increased teachers „pedagogical
content knowledge. Students were active, motivated and could perform many
activities suggested, and increased their oral Comprehension Skills. There was no
statistical significance in the increase of performance in the experimental classes as
the outcome of the approach and materials used. The study recommends that the
Ministry of Education should provide in-service training for English language
teachers to update their pedagogical knowledge and skills. The Ministry should also
encourage teachers and researchers to design exemplary learning materials that
would facilitate teaching and learning through the competence based curriculum.
English teachers should use designed and tested materials in the teaching of selfexpression.
In addition, more similar studies are encouraged to be conducted using a
large sample to build competence on the same aspect.
