Dissertation (MA Education)
This study is about the critique of the Tanzania education system, particularly the streaming system that is based on academic alone in light of diminishing world employment. It was conducted in Bunda District, Mara Region; involving secondary school students, secondary school leavers, students' guidance and counsellors, heads of schools, school boards chairpersons as well as the DSEO and the DYDO. The study employed a cross sectional survey design and mixed research method. The data were collected through interviews, questionnaires and documentary review; and then analyzed and presented through tables and figures as well as individual cases and quoted speeches. In general, the results obtained from the study reveal that, currently, the major criterion used in streaming students in Tanzania secondary schools is academic; mainly Form Two national examination results are used to put students into certain streams. This gives little emphasize on the holistic development of the leaner that considers the integration of other skills like self help and entrepreneurial skills. In this case, this system has led to little chances for students to get employment. Hence, a number of recommendations are made on how to improve as have been made to different stakeholders.
