dc.description This dissertation covers a report on the impact of training and development on the performance and productivity secondary school teachers in Kinondoni Municipality. Specifically it was an attempt to address to find out the factors that determine the performance and productivity of secondary school teachers in Kinondoni Municipality, to assess the training and development practices and processes among secondary schools in the Municipality, to find out the relationship between poor academic performance in secondary schools and training and development among secondary school teachers, to identify the challenges facing training and development among secondary school teachers in Tanzania and to identify the role of government on training and development among secondary school teachers in Tanzania. Both theoretical and empirical literatures were thoroughly reviewed. A Sample of 50 informants was included in the study. A case study research design was employed. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews and documentary review. Data analysis was done in reference to the research objectives. Data from the field indicates that, training and development play a great role on the performance and productivity of teachers under various dimensions. However, it was seen that training and development for teachers has been very rhetoric due to deficit training budgets. On the other hand, there are number of factors which are contributing to the poor performance of secondary schools in the Municipality, such as low teachers’ competence and moral decadence, motivational issues, low motivation, lack of commitment of parents, absence of dormitories for students, low salaries and other incentives, lack of teaching facilities and other learning materials, working conditions, scarcity of secondary school teachers and the challenge of English language. Moreover, it was seen that secondary schools are still being faced with challenges such as inadequate number of teachers for science subjects, poor organization of training programmes, financial deficit, teachers’ turnover and presence of untrained teachers Recommendations were made such as teachers training programs, budget, training policy, improving teacher preparation, developing knowledge and skills, teachers’ motivation and adequate physical and social infrastructure. Finally the researcher has proposed further studies on Big Results Now (BRN) on the education sector.
