dc.description This study addressed the question of how pre-form one course (PFOC) enhances students’ learning in secondary schools. The study was inspired by interest on what makes Catholic secondary schools to produce students who are intellectually well trained, moral upright, social conscious and spiritual oriented. The study involved three objectives: First, to explore the meaning assigned to PFOC conducted in the selected Catholic secondary schools. Second, to examine the implementation of PFOC conducted in the selected Catholic secondary schools and third, to investigate teachers’ and students’ views on the usefulness of PFOC in enhancing students’ learning in the selected Catholic secondary schools. The study approach was qualitative and research design was multiple cases. Data from the informants were collected through interviews, focus group discussion, and documentary analysis. The study involved a total of 64 informants from four Catholic secondary schools which can be classified as follows: twelve teachers, four pre-form one course coordinators who were also teachers, twenty four pre-form one students and twenty four form two students. The principle of sample selection was purposive and random in order to meet the intention of the study. Study findings indicate that PFOC is a pertinent programme and has added value which enhances students’ learning in secondary schools. However, the programme faced challenges like shortage of teachers and teaching and learning resources. This study recommends that, schools should acquire sufficient teachers, and teaching and learning resources.
