dc.description This study examined the effectiveness of motivation strategies of teachers in teaching and learning in the Public secondary schools in Tanzania. The study was guided by three specific objectives namely: Identify the motivational strategies used to promote teaching and learning among teachers in public secondary schools in Dodoma city; to assess the effectiveness of the strategies used to promote motivation in teaching and learning among teachers in public secondary schools in Tanzania; lastly, to suggest the strategies for effective implementation of motivation strategies for improving teaching and learning among teachers in public secondary schools. The study employed a theory of Hierarchy of Needs by Maslow (1954). The study was conducted in Dodoma City Council. The study employed mixed approach where both qualitative and quantitative approached were used in the study. Moreover, the study employed cross-sectional survey research design. Also, the study employed 60 respondents where 55 were teachers, 2 were Education Officers one from regional level and one from ward level and 3 head teachers. Data collection methods were Questionnaire, Interview and Documentary review. The study findings based on research objectives indicated that: in the first objective, there were motivational strategies used to promote teachers’ motivation and among the revealed findings in chapter four were increasing of salary to teachers, position appraisal, provision of teaching and learning materials, on time payment of salaries to teachers to mention few. In the second research objective on extent to which motivational strategies are effective in promoting motivation to teachers in teaching and learning is to a large extent. The third objective revealed that there were effective measures to be put in place so as to motivate teachers and among the measures were such as on time payment of teachers, frequent trainings of teachers in schools, provision and repairing of houses for teachers. The study recommends that the government should increase salaries to teachers, give remuneration, provide and repair housings for teachers also teaching and learning materials to motivate teachers in secondary schools.
