Data were collected through interviews guidelines, observation checklist, documentary review and questionnaire (likert scale). On the other hand, qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis while quantitative data were analyzed by statistical package for social sciences (SPSS 16 version). The findings of the study show that the status of sports in secondary schools was poor, there was unavailability of sport resources, poor motivation, lack of intra and inter sports schools competitions, more boys were participating more in sports than girls and inappropriate use of sports allocated time. Also, it was revealed that there is association between sports participation and academic achievement, significant difference between sports students and non-sports students. Generally, this study recommends that the government should prepare and buy sports equipment, train sports teachers and coaches, also utilize sports time as required.
