Dissertation (MA Education)This study informs of the factors which contribute to school dropout in public primary school in Tanzania but with a selective reference to Dodoma City. The dissertation is organized into three broad themes that revolve around the factors contributing to pupil dropout in public primary school, the strategies employed by schools to arrest pupils’ dropout in public primary school, the role of community in arresting pupils’ dropout in public primary schools. A descriptive research design was used to generate data from 70 informants who were sampled from five schools of Dodoma City. This sample was reached through purposive and snowball, and convenience sampling techniques. In so doing, 5 head teachers, 10 teachers, 40 continuing pupils, 5 dropout pupils, and 10 community members were included in the sample in this study. These informants participated in the study through interviews and focus group discussions. The generated data were subjected to content analysis in which pattern of themes and sub-themes were identified by using eight steps suggested by Zhang, (1996). Generally, the study established that poor school environment, corporal punishment from teachers, low income, and poverty of their parents, parents’ low level of education, occupational background of parents, students’ misbehavior disorders, early marriage, and poor parents’ attitude towards girls’ education which increased pupils’ dropout in Dodoma City. The study recommends the government to allocate more funds and resources to public primary schools in Dodoma City and other areas with similar characteristics in the nation. Further, in collaboration with stakeholders, the Government should improve school infrastructure to avoid double shifts of students in a day, which has proved difficult to monitor. There should be guidance and counselling programmes for pupils and mobilize the society to support in the fight against school dropouts
