Dissertation (MA Education)The study explored the influence of career information on students’ choice of programme of study in Tanzania, based on experience from selected higher education institutions in Dodoma city. The study specifically explored the students’ understanding of sources of career information in choosing programme of study in higher education institutions, examined the role of career information on students’ choice of programme of study in higher education institutions, as well as assessed the challenges students faced in accessing and using career information to choose programme of study in higher education institutions. Mixed research approach was used as coupled with a convergent parallel research design. Data were collected by using questionnaires and focus group discussion to meet objectives and research questions. The findings revealed that, there was scant students’ understanding on sources of career information accessible to them during the choice of programme of study in higher education institutions hence, some of them were not satisfied with the programme they were undertaking. Career information plays a vital role to students during career choice and decisions through choosing a programme that is effectively productive, helping students develop personal confidence in a specific field as well as help students in decision making towards selection of programme of study. The findings also revealed that students reported to have encountered several challenges in accessing career information such as lack of internet access due to lack of information and communication technology (ICT) skills, economic hardship as well as remote geographical location. It was also noted that limited resources as well as absence of enough and clear career information in secondary school were challenges during the choice of programme of study. Based on the findings, the study recommends that, researchers should continue exploring more about accessibility of career information particularly to secondary school students to guide and motivate them in choosing a programme of study in higher education institutions. Also the study recommends that, all education institutions should create a window in which career information can be accessed by all stakeholders.
