Dissertation (MA Education)This study assessed family influence on undergraduate students’ degree programme choice a case of Sokoine University of Agriculture in Morogoro. It focused on how the families influence the choice of degree programme among their children. The study was guided by three objectives which were: to identify the nature of family involvement in degree programme choices among undergraduate students in Sokoine University of Agriculture, to examine the impact of family influence on the selection of degree programme among undergraduate students in Sokoine University of Agriculture and; to establish the determinants of degree programme choice among undergraduate students in Sokoine University of Agriculture. The study was guided by the family system theory proposed by Murray Bowen whereby mixed approach was employed with exploratory research design. The study involved 117 respondents where 97 were students from Sokoine University of Agriculture and 20 family members from Morogoro Region. In addition, the study employed simple random sampling and purposive sampling. Furthermore, the study used semi-structured interview and questionnaire as data collection methods. Moreover, thematic analysis was used to analyse qualitative data and quantitative data were analysed by using percentages, frequencies, chi square and Pearson correlation through statistical software. The study revealed that majority of the families were involved in choosing degree programme for their children. Furthermore, the impact of family influence was revealed in terms of ease in giving financial support, encouragement, awareness, giving advice, easy in application, poor performance. The determinants of the degree programme choice were family influence, personal interest, academic qualification, peer pressure, easy employment, loan, and course competition. The study recommends that family members should have enough information on the choice of degree programme before advising their children. The study concludes that family members and students should cooperate in the process of choosing a degree programme.
