Dissertation (MA Education)The study assessed the perception of educational stakeholder’s perceptions on barriers to contraceptives use among public secondary school female adolescents in Bahi district in Dodoma region. This study was guided by three objectives and questions, the first objective was to explore the perception of the educational stakeholder’s on the use of contraceptives among secondary school female adolescent as a strategy to overcome teenage pregnancy. The second objective was to investigate the perceived barriers which adolescent school girls encounter in accessing contraceptives as a method to prevent pregnancy. The third objective was to explore the strategies that could enhance adolescent school girl’s use of contraceptives. The study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data in this study were collected through interviews and focus group discussion. A total sample size of forty nine (49) participants was used in the study whereas 12 teachers and 18 parents were interviewed while 19 students participated in a focus group discussion. From the study, it was observed that, factors such as educational stakeholder’s perception towards the use of contraceptives among adolescents, lack of knowledge and education among the parents and the adolescents themselves, government policies and laws, lack of parental support, customs and norms were the obstacles towards the use of contraceptives among female adolescents’ secondary school students. Furthermore, the study found that, increase of school age pregnancy, termination of school, abortions, and sometimes death were the effects of barrier to contraceptive use among adolescent school girls in Bahi district. The study concluded that, students should be facilitated with family planning education, parental-child talk, and improvement of government policies and regulations that can favor girls to use contraceptives without any fear or restrictions. The study recommended that contraceptive education has to be implemented in secondary schools so as to help the increase of the usage of contraceptive among secondary school girls to avoid early pregnancies. Parents should talk to their children especially girls about their sexual life and effects of unsafe sex to raise awareness for adolescents and facilitate the application of contraceptives.
