This study investigated the perceived adherence to expected social manners and academic performances among students in selected secondary schools. This study was guided by three research objectives namely; to investigate particular expected social manners among students, to examine the extents to which students adhere to expected social manners in different situations at schools also to explore the extent to which students‟ adhere to expected social manners influence academic performances. This study was mainly comprised of a sample of 116 students from four schools. Besides twenty students were randomly selected and one discipline teacher from each of the schools, they purposively selected. The findings of the study mainly pointed out ten expected social manners that were normally adhered. These in their order of prevalence were such as initiating greetings, respecting others and decent wearing. Others were sense of humor, obedience to teachers, helping others in studies and accepting academic advices. Besides comforting other‟s in studies, respecting time of others and begging pardons were normally adhered by the students as reported by the respondents of the study. Due to a fact that majority of students who were reported normally adhered the expected social manners had relatively higher academic performances (Distinction and Merit).Inferential statistics was also applied in data analysis whereby the conducted one-way Anova showed that the observed differences across the students adherence level expected social manners at significant .000 alongside academic performances were statistically significant (P <.05). That indicated there were influences for student‟s adherence on expected social manners to their academic performances. Noteworthy, the previous studies and theories such as social learning and behaviorism theory of learning were generally in harmony to the findings of the current research. |
