dc.description Dissertation (MA Education)
dc.description The purpose of this study was to explore the strategies used in conflict management between the heads of secondary schools and teachers in secondary schools in Kondoa District. The objectives of the study were: to find out the major sources of conflicts between heads of secondary schools and teachers, to identify effective conflict management strategies that are used in resolving conflicts between heads of secondary schools and teachers and, to examine the challenges encountered in the course of conflict management. The study adopted a case study design. The target population was 13 secondary schools in Kondoa District with a population of 39 teachers and 13 heads of secondary schools. Questionnaires, interview guides and focus group discussion were used as key data collection tool for heads of secondary school and teachers. Data collected was analyzed and presented using tables. The findings indicated embezzlement of school funds, absenteeism, indiscipline, administrative incompetence and poor communication as the major sources of conflicts in secondary schools in Kondoa District. Findings also indicated the use of various conflict management methods, the use of school boards, regular staff meetings, guidance and counseling and altering human variables as the most effective methods applied in managing conflicts. In the course of conflict management, the study reveals a number of challenges that are encountered including: complete hatred between Heads of secondary schools (HOSS) and teachers, lack of conflict management skills, scarce financial resources, detest of negotiations, political interference and biasness. Basing on the findings, it is recommended that HOSS and teachers should be trained in conflict management.
