dc.description Dissertation (MA Education)
dc.description This study aimed to find the contribution of school inspection in improving teachers’ work performance in secondary schools in Tanzania. The study employed the Scientific Management and Human Relation Theories. The study was conducted in 7 secondary schools in Pangani by involving 57 informants where 14 were students, 28 teachers, 7 heads of schools, 2 District Education Officers (DEOs), 3 Zonal School Inspectors and 3 District School Inspectors. Data were collected using questionnaires, interviews and documentary review. The findings from the study revealed that school inspection plays a great role towards the improvement of teachers’ work performance. Teachers perceived school inspection to promote their professional skills through the advices they provide after classroom observation. The study further found that the inspection reports and recommendations were not acted upon by the DEOs. It was also found that school inspectors face various challenges such as uncooperative attitudes of teachers and schools’ administrators to inspectors and insufficient budget for inspection function. The study recommends that the Government needs to invest more resources towards school inspection by providing funds, seminars or workshops that will strengthen the professional development of teachers to improve the their work performance
